Don't know where the rest of these people get their information from, but we just moved a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army about 2 weeks ago, and he had about 8 guns that he had got to keep. I don't know which kind, I just know that 5 of them were sidearms.

No member of the military can keep their weapons when you leave military. The weapons belong to the taxpayers. There is one exception!

I can speak for the US Army, when a Colonel is promoted to 1 Star General(Brigadier General), part of his General Officer (G.O.) Kit is an idividually numbered and engraved 9mm. When that General retires, he or she has the option to purchase that weapon or return it to the militaries inventory.

Yes but only if you are a male. The rifle that the military issues you, you have to turn back in to the Military doesn't matter if you are male or female.

My "gun" has never left my body since the day I was born.

However, I never got to take my rifle with me when transferring from unit to unit -- I was always issued a new one, as the rifle is assigned to the unit, not the soldier, on the Table Of Equipment (TOE).

And I CERTAINLY was not allowed to take my rifle with me when I retired from the Army. That is government property, not my personal property.

Males are allowed to keep their guns. Their rifles, however, they must return.

So what is the difference between the two? One is for fighting.

FYI, don't call it a "gun" in front of military folks. It's a weapon, or a rifle.
