Best hot dog, hands down Grey's Papaya
Best pizza, again, hands down John's on Bleecker
As for the other five places you MUST EAT, don't fall for the usual suspects. Here are the best five in no particular order -
1. Gramercy Tavern (20th street and Park Avenue South)
2. Blue Hill (Washington Place near Washington Square Park)
3. Wolfgang's Steakhouse (31st and Park)
4. Babbo (Waverly Place)
5. The Shake Shack (Madison Square Park, open March - November only)

Best Hot Dog = Grey's Papaya
Best Pizza = anyplace except John's Pizza - try the place on the corner of 6th Ave and 11th Street, the place across from Tompkins Square Park on Avenue A, Patsy's Pizza's are really good, there is a little dive place on 9th Avenue between 54th and 55th that is amazing! Avoid chains like Sbarro....
Top 5 places really depends on what you like to eat and what your budget is!
If you want real NY places, avoid the tourist traps, go to the edges of the city - places like Fraunces Tavern downtown, Aureole on East 61st, any of the Jean Georges restaurants, Luna in Little Italy, Wo Hop in Chinatown, Bridge Cafe near the Seaport, etc..

Most of the famous restaurants need 2-4 weeks advance in reservation, perhaps you should try some ethnic food in the following areas:
1. Chinatown (authentic Chinese)
2. East Village (Japanese and Indian)
3. Chelsea (Italian)
4. Hell's Kitchen (Thai and Mexican)
5. Meat Packing District (French and Spanish)
For hot dog and pizza, go to Papaya, or the one right by 36st and 8 ave.

Best hot dog is either Nathan's in Coney Island or Papaya King on Second Avenue in Manhattan. For good pizza, go to little Italy and pick any family owned pizza parlor. It is like saying which is the best beer. It is a personal choice. Where to eat depends on your budget. The Four Seasons is a good place. TAO is phenomenal and expensive. A good place for Italian is Carmine's. They have two places, one in the theater district and the other in the upper west side. If you like sushi, don't miss Nobu. If you like big deli sandwiches, go to the Stage Delicatessen or the Carnegie Deli. Now you made me hungry and I am on a diet :-)

A great restaurant is Carmines. There 2, one on 40 something street and the other one is on 70 something street. Both on the west side. Hot dog place Papayas on 72nd st or village. Don't bother for the 1 on 86th St. on the east side and Pizza Famigila on 98 st on madison.

Just five? That is tough as NYC has amazing restaurants.Nobu or Rain or for great food and a beautiful atmosphere, Candle 79 (vegan, but you might never guess it, they have wonderful food and it is very relaxing), Mayrose Diner or Cafeteria (on the less expensive side, but wonderful waffles and Cafeteria has a great waffle sundae), Peter Luger in Brooklyn for steak and Bed or Duvet is fun for something different (they have beds instead of tables).
