I'm having a case of deja-vu. A bunch of us answered this question earlier today for someone else:

My conculusion was to get the D80:
* Bigger viewfinder
* Decent sized grip
* Spot metering
* 'Feels' better - with the dRebel line, I'm always afraid that I'll snap the camera in half.
Vs. the 400D
* Better image quality at high ISO levels (above 800)
* Dust reduction system
Both brands have an excellent selection of lenses and a good upgrade path - there's no reason to favor one brand over the other.
The review sites seem to agree that the D80 is worth the extra $200: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond80/page29.asp

I will say if you're planning to spend the money on the d80. You should compare the d80 with the Canon EOS 30D instead. If you live in the US, Canon is having a rebate on 30D now and the price different between the XTi and 30D is only a hundred or two. I was going to get the XTi but I am glad I got the 30D. Its much better build camera. I am not saying the 30D is better than the D80 as I never use a Nikon camera before. I pick Canon base on my past experience with their camera and I play around with my friend's D70 before and I don't really like the control and interface. I guess I am the "Canon guy". Anyways, look into the 30D. Its a good camera.

I agree with OMG. My brother is trying to decide between these exact two cameras this week. I'm pulling for the D80 all the way.

Hey, I'd be curious to let him buy the Canon and then I could evaluate it a bit, but friends don't let friends....... No, not really. They are really both excellent cameras. You should handle each in a real camera shop, ask some questions, and buy the one that feels right to you. I think the "cheaper" Nikon lenses are better than similarly priced Canon lenses and this could be a factor in your decision to buy the Nikon.
