because I don't have a cat flap and don't want to leave windows open yet when he's fast asleep at 8pm I feel horrible putting him out, he is meowing at about 4.30 am to come back in so I let him in but he doesn't meow before that time, so I presume he's doing what cats do but I don't have much experience with cats can anybody advise?

No, cats don't necessarily sleep all night.

Do you go to bed early & get up early? If not & the 4.30am awakening is becoming a pain, why not try keeping him in ...invest in a litter tray for night use in case of any little accidents though.

It might take him a couple of days to get used to the new routine. But he'll be safer inside & you'll get undisturbed sleep ... hopefully.

My two cats stay in most of the night - even though I've got a cat flap. They play in the daytime, inside and out, and sleep at night (and in the day as well as they are v lazy!). I think it would be better to keep them in at night and have a litter tray indoors.

But all cats are different (although all a little crazy as far as I can tell).

Hi there, Cats sleep for about 16 hours of the day or night so yes he could sleep all night. But why don't you get a litter tray. You don't have to use litter you can use soil if you have a garden. That is what I do. Winter is coming so maybe leave him in. With a litter tray. Hope this works.

My cats sleep all night, yet they are stored energetic during the day by potential of the two the canines or by potential of spending the day outdoors. whether they did wander at night it would not be a controversy by using fact the canines keeps them from our dozing areas. They nonetheless will ask to get out at night yet we shop them in and that they curl up with the canines and pass to sleep. having a cat wandering the homestead at night is a huge thought. The capture and eat all the bugs interior the homestead. My cat camped out for 2 weeks in our at present offered century homestead. by potential of the time we moved in there have been no mice and no bugs and the cat had even eaten all the spider webs that she ought to attain.

Cats do not sleep ALL night, they just sleep whenever they want. Alot of cats sleep throughout the day and just get up when they have to go to the bathroom or when they get hungry and some just wonder around doing whatever.

Cats sleep for 75% of the day but never sleep for long periods. Usually for about 20 minutes at a time...thats where the phrase catnaps come from.
I wouldnt worry too much as they easily entertain themselves when alone. They miaowing at the door is probably just habit as you are giving into his demands and he knows you will let him in.
They have no sense of time so wont be bored! Good luck

Mine does. Then, in the morning he stands at the back door and waits to be let out. You and the cat will eventually find a routine that works for you. Relax, cats are very independant and easy to be with.

My cats used to be fast asleep at 11.30 at night and i assumed they would sleep alnight but come 2am they would wake me up to be let out, this went on for months until i couldnt stick it any longer ,i was sleep deprived!!!
I bought lovely cat beds, litter trays and made one of our outhouses 'theirs', so every evening i put them in with food and water , they are warm, cosy, well fed and safe and when they are let out in the morning they have the whole day to do 'catty' things either in the house with me or out around the garden!
