I paid $10 for one of my cats from someone who's cat had a litter. When buying a non-purebred cat from a private seller or pet store you're looking at a range of $10 - $40 (at least in my area).

I recommend checking your local animal shelter -- shelters typically charge between $30 and $40 for a kitten (again it might vary based on location). Check out http://www.petfinder.com to find adoptable kittens in your area.

The plus side to getting a kitten from the shelter or pet store is they are tested for Fe-Luke, some have their first set of shots, micro-chipping is often included, and some shelters and pet stores will give you a discount voucher for a spay/neuter.

Hi there,

If you are not concerned about the breed, I would say get a free one. I know you said that is rare in your town, but you may find that if you put up a flyer at the local store, someone will call you.

Many pets bought in a pet store come from 'mills' where pets are bred with the intention of selling them at stores. Often these breeders are only out for the money, and will inbreed the pets. This can lead to health problems that don't show up until later. Also, these pet store pets are not as socialized as we would like. They get grabbed and picked up, and they have to put up with being in cages and the cleanser smell from the store.

There also may be some good kittens at your local pound, or humane society. There may be an adoption fee, but it should not be too much.

There is also a site called PetsUnlimited.com where people list their animals for sale. There may be someone near you.

Good luck!

You should really go to an animal shelter. Those poor cats need loving homes. They'd already have their shots and be litter trained. Also they'd be used to human contact. You should never buy animals from pet stores. Find an animal shelter, or see if you can rescue a kitten from a farm or somewhere.

Cats and kitten can go for between $15 and $80 through shelters, pounds and rescues. You can find cats and kittens through the following websites. They let you search for pets by your city name and zip code:

petfinder.com
1-800-save-a-pet.com
pets911.com

You can also go onto freecycle.org and see if anyone in your area has free cats available.

Don't buy from a pet store. Pet store cats and dogs are often the cast-offs from unethical breeders and are horrendously overpriced.

I know this is not the answer you want but have you considered getting a rescue cat they are most likely to be cheaper. Also there are loads more of orphan cats that need a good home to go to.

You need to educate yourself and explore the benefits of having a kitten and the expense. Do not get one if you are not going to take it to the vet for shots and regular check-ups.

And, why buy one, adopt one that needs a home and keep one from being gassed.
