If Lucifer offered man the knowledge that God denied us then why is he the bad one?

He's not the bad one. Jehovah is the Satan that has mislead so many on the earth.

He was bad even before that.
He chose to reject God because he thought he was too good to save him.
The fact that we now know what evil is and do it, might not seem all that negative.
The thing that was wrong was telling us that we would then become equals to God because we would know what he knows.
That simply isn't true. Even if we knew all God did ( which we don't) we still would not have the power he has.
Misinformation and lying is wrong. That is what makes Lucifer bad.
Lucifer never offered the knowledge to us. He couldn't give it to us we had to take it (eat the fruit). We chose this new form of knowledge.
What was wrong is that he told us we would then become like God, and that will never be possible.

for the sake of those out there who are interested in an answer, here goes, lucifer and the Angels were created before us, how much longer we don`t know, suffice to say they had ample time to come to know God much clearer than we can,because of their Angelic higher intellect.
lucifer was the highest angel and had dominance over countless numbers of others,and decided by his own angelic free will to take God`s place with these underlings.
after his rebellion against God he was thrown out of Heaven and the place in which he was imprisoned he has made Hell,by hatred of God and man.
the knowledge that you speak of was not some secret spell or incantation but concealed lies, he wanted to get back at God by ruining the innocence of man and did so,and what horror Adam and Eve discovered when they too disobed God ,for the lie was ingenious and delivered nothing, and isn`t lucifer still working that number on mankind even now,and still deceiving many, day in and day out.
but the good news my friend is that Christ has broken lucifer`s deceptive lie and stranglehold and those who choose to believe in Christ and follow Him will be children of truth and light.
there it is ,you can choose to mock or humbly accept the revelation Who is Christ the Lord,Saviour of mankind or continue letting yourself be deceived by the father of lies,lucifer.

That's what I don't really understand.

But I'm one of those 'Thinking Christians', rather than a lot of these fundamentalists christians that believe rational thought is wrong and the work of the Devil.

In the Adam and Eve story, the serpent was only opening up Eve's eyes to the TRUTH.

The only knowledge that God denied us was the knowledge of sin, which is disobedience to the direct commands of God. When satan gave us that knowledge we lost everything, and God was very sad, and satan was very happy, because he hurt God very much.

The conflict was that Satan wanted to make mankind have to worship God, an instictive response. God wanted mankind to be as much like himself as possible, without instinct. However, even our laws follow what is known as instinct in that if a ruling has already been passed, that stands for every other simular crime. So by law, mankind follows Satan.
