Hijab is more than a peice of cloth. It is a liberation of women. HOW DO PEOPLE assume it's male oppresion, when many women fight for their right to cover? About 73% of Muslim reverts are WOMEN why would they revert if hijab was oppressive? And this is in countries like the U.S. and Britain.

Hijab benefits the society in many ways. Islam doesn't prohibit interaction, women don't have to wear hijab in front of other women, just men. So therefore, Islam encourages interaction..... with the same sex. (Aside from relatives, spouses, children lol, and other exceptions)

its all media hype. some 6 years back it was not an issue. it started just now.
but some how muslims are also responsible for that . they are not understanding the present needs of modern world. Covering a face is totally a cultural thing and its not related to religion. Islam only asked woman to cover her body very well and completely so that men cant see their body curves. As women’s body curves ( breast and butts are also very attractive).
Now question is why they cover in a society where it look odd? The answer is their mental approach. Their mental approach is not according to the west. Their mind is not accepting the things, freedom when they come to west. They want to live some 200 yrs back and they don’t want to come to 2006 and face the modem needs and fresh approach.

Hijab is cool with me.

I think the people who do react negatively are relatively few in number. Most people are tolerant and accapting of other beliefs and customs.

The problem is the intolerant people make more noise and tend to be more confrontational about it. Keep doing your thing and be glad where in a free society where even ignorance and intolerance is tolerated.

Western women are just hostile, period. They are hostile towards men a well. @ Serene - Incorrect. I live in Thailand, and western women are on another level when it comes to hostility. Just because a man points out that foreign women have a better attitude doesn't mean he is "fetishizing" them. Keep your feminist shaming tactics to yourself. @ Merisa - Exactly, you're a western women, which means your hostile, period. It seems like you're proud of this.

its because they dont understand it....they dont understand islam....all they see is what is on tv and how they show islam...and they show it in a very negative way...if they showed the truth of islam and why muslim girls wear hijab they would understand and most impotrantly RESPECT it until that happens and until the media shows the truth about islam expect more hostility towards islam and the hijab...
by the way i wear the hijab alhamdulla.....
good luck all the muslim girls out there :D

Hijab is prescribed by the One who knows best and can't be wrong. It is meant to protect women and community. Muslim women that I know love to wear it as it identifies them and it is a form of worshiping God that is exclusive to them.

I hardly see why people get so upset over it. Since it is just a piece of cloth, Muslims and Arabs who currently wear them should have no problem about giving them up. They serve no purpose, and frankly, faces are needed to properly understand someones intentions when speaking.

I don't think that everyone always does, but I can understand that it might feel that way to you.

I do not understand the vociferous objections to it - after all, don't nuns cover their hair as well?
