I've heard they are not reliable at all. Should I stay away from them? What about the Grand Cherokees? Also, should I pay more to get a V8 instead of the V6? I need some power, but is the difference worth the money?

I have friends that have had Grand Cherokees in the past 6 years - all had problems. One spontaneously caught on fire in their driveway, the other two had chronic braking and electrical problems. HOWEVER, the older, regular cherokees (sport, and classic) are GREAT. I have a 98 Cherokee Classic - it's a marvelous car. I also have a 98 Wrangler Sport that I will probably still have when I die. They are just fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about them. Just stay away from the Grand Cherokee and you'll be fine.

I owned two. The first a 1986 that was unstopable and hardly ever had to use the 4 wheel drive. Then I traded for a 2001 that was the last year and a total piece of junk as far as I was concerned! With any of them the drop floor pans are a real pain in the you know what! I drove a friends Grand Cherokee and was no more impressed than the junk I had! Typical Chrysler product! I wouldn't recommend one to anyone! They aren't what they used to be like the old willies and FC's!

Jeep Cherokees are not very reliable cars. They have a poor frame and can tip over very easy. Many accidents have been recorded with Jeep Cherokees. It depends on the price range but if you really want power go with the V8. I hope this helps you.

Cherokees are pretty good.I'd stay away from the Grand Cherokees, they have more options to go bad.
I've had three 96 Cherokees in the past couple of years, totaled one in a wreck, bought and sold 1 ,186000 miles, made money.Driving one that the lady didnt change the oil,had leaks ,and drove it till it locked up.They have oil, trans ,rearend leaks sometimes.Just check it out ,have a mechanic check for leaks.I ve seen alot of Cherokees with around 200000 miles, that speaks for itself.Get a 4.0 Inline 6, plenty of power and 16-18mpg,and they last the longest, keep oil in them

My wife had a 1997 Grand Cherokee V8 that would not die. She never had any real problems with it, and kept it for 7 years.

I haven't much faith in the newer JEEP vehicles. I drive a 97 Wrangler and doubt I will ever get rid of her. The newer models seem to be made very cheap, not nearly as rugged as their previous models.

Almost anyone that I talk to hates the new ones because the front suspention and steering are high maintanence... and expensive to fix.
