Cats will attempt to groom people they consider to be one of their own. It is a great compliment.

I had a long haired dog and one day a feral cat came into our yard and "adopted" my dog. He used to groom him and sleep on him. The cat hated people but loved my dog.

Cats are part of a social group and so care/clean everyone they consider as part of their group. It is one of their ways of marking each other. You, my friend, have been given an honor of being included in the group. The cat sees you reciprocating when you snuggle/groom/pet them.

I really miss that private time with my kitty. Since she had her kittens she has NO time for me at all. Makes me so mad, after all I have done. I am just completely heartbroken so please, enjoy the fact that you have a cat who loves you so much.

Domesticated cats believe that their owners are their parents, thus you are a cat and they need to clean you. They also think that when you pet them, that you are bathing them.

Some cats like the salt on your skin. My cat does not groom me, however. Some do, some don't. They won't tell us why.
