start with a clean coffee maker and pot. use one tea spoon per cup of water, sprinkle a dash of salt on top of the grounds before you brew it, this will eliminate bitterness. That way you can make a nice strong cup without it tasting bad.
hint, best way to clean your coffee maker is to first run through some vinnegar and then plain water.

Maybe try a dark roast coffee. Then use a drip coffee system where you boil the water, use a filter and the water drips on to the coffee grounds and runs through to a pot underneath. You will need a very fine grind of coffee for drip brewing but the coffee will taste smoother than using a coffee machine or percolator.
You can make stronger coffee by putting more spoons of coffee in to brew. We like coffee strong, dark and smooth (not acidic) I usually use at least 7 ot 8 spoons for 6 cups of coffee because we like ours strong. I like French Market coffee very much and it has chicory in the blend. Try chicory coffee and see if it pleases you.

The absolute best coffee comes from the freshest beans possible and the purest water. Buy the coffee in bean form and grind it yourself. Keep it sealed and refrigerated. Use bottled or filtered water. Also be careful what you use to clean the coffee pot. Soap residue can affect the taste. Hope that helps.

This is how I make my coffee:
I fill the water up to line 6.
I then put in 6 heaping tablespoons (or just well-rounded ones) of the coffee.
Some people say it's too strong, but my boyfriend and I think it is PERFECT this way. Especially with a lil sugar and flavored CoffeeMate creamer.

My husband likes to use Maxwell House filter packs. pre-measured in a round filter. all you do is put one or two in your filter basket(depends on if your making half or a full pot). Very easy and not messy grounds. You can find them in the aisle with the coffee.

get a french press. i got mine at target for 10 dollars -- it doesn't have to be an expensive starbucks thing. i put 2-3 tablespoons espresso roast coffee in pour a cup of hot water let it sit and then you press. its a little messier but the coffee is great! you can use a cheap espresso roast (pilon and bustelo are latin american and good low oil, low acid roasts and cost under 3.00 for 10 oz) for cafe au lait just add some hot milk.
