My internet provider is also my telephone service provider. Isn't there some way to see (via the computer?) who's calling without paying the $9 a month service fee. When you contact the telephone company and activate the caller ID feature, what is it exactly they're doing? Are they allowing a signal (ID) to be sent or are they just "unblocking" a signal? It seems like it would be the latter. If so, wouldn't this signal be coming over the phone line that also serves the computer? Surely you guys out there that are much smarter than me have figured this out?

no because the phone company controls the caller id-if you are using Internet for your phone it's not the same equipment. Also the caller id feature is "turned on" the the central office, if it's not "on" it won't come through. Unless your Internet provider offers caller id, it won't work.

The only thing i know is to buy a new phone that has caller ID. But as you said if you dont want a new phone adding to the list should come up but if not it wont show up

A few years ago, before high speed became wildly popular, I downloaded a free program from Download.com that would give CID info through your dial up line. A pop up appeared on your computer telling you who was calling (you had to have call waiting).

Maybe you can look for something like that. I have MCI and cable internet, so I got rid of the program years ago.

It is a option they add to you phone that tells the switch to send this info to you. I know as far as my CO we needed to add some cards to the switch in order to use this feature with a POTS line.
