I will start by stating I live in Canada. It is paramount here in the Oil and Gas Industry alone that you preheat critical pressure related equipment to 300 degrees celsius prior to lace or patch welding., Though in your case, on cast material I cant offer what American policy requires for what you are trying to achieve. In almost every case here in Canada for pre- heating we use what is called a " Tiger Torch". All this is, is a 20 lb propane tank with an attached torch that pre- heats the surface of the two objects to be joined to as the above mentioned 300 c . Not sure if this helps, but you could probably Google the American Welding Institute or something of near qulificatilon and get the answer you require.

Soldering is the term you are looking for. It is related to brazing in that a metal alloy is melted and flows into a joint and essentially glues the joint together when the metal cools and solidifies. Solder is a lead-tin alloy. The percentage of tin determines the melting temperature. Most soldering irons run at about 750 degrees F.

What will be your selection as a filler rod? Are you going to go with a Nickel electrode as your filler metal? Will you use a jig to hold the parts in alignment during the preheat, welding and post heat? How are you going to prepare the joint prior to setting it up in the jig? Lots of things to look into. By the way, What cast iron object are you going to attempt to repair? Good Luck
