It’s the amount you pay out of pocket before the insurance company will begin helping you pay the bill. Let’s look at a plan with an annual deductible of $1,500. You will have to pay your own medical bills for the first $1,500. After that, the insurance company will pick up all or a percentage of the tab. So if you had expenses of $750 for one medical visit and another for $500, you would need to spend $250 under your plan before your insurer will help you pay your medical expenses.

Health plans with higher deductibles have lower monthly payments and the reverse is true – plans with lower deductibles have higher monthly payments.

I’ve included links below to two articles which do a pretty good job of explaining how health insurance works and how to go about shopping for health insurance. If you’d like to check out local health plan prices, try MostChoice.com.

It is considered a "cost share" from the subscriber. So, just like with auto insurance, you are expected to pay the first $25, $50, etc. and then insurance pays according to their limits.

As an example: your dental plan pays 80% of a procedure that the dentist charges $100 for. If you have a $25 deductible, you would pay $25 and then $20 on top of that as your 20% share.

Usually, the deductible is only charged once per year and is often waived on preventative treatment. Ask your HR department for details of your plan.
