If you are planning on attending medical school it is definitely a good idea to volunteer in a hospital or any other medical setting. Medical schools look very highly upon volunteer work or other medical experience when accepting candidates.
Upon high school graduation, if you are going to college far away and so will not be volunteering at the same hospital, make sure to get letters of recommendation from your supervisors. Also, document all your volunteer time, even if all you do is write down the dates and hours of your service. Don't stop volunteering once you get to college, med schools will consider recent experience even more important.
Since you know what you want to do already, you might consider an accelerated medical school program like BU's 7 year medical program (link: http://www.bu.edu/cas/academics/programs/medical.html ). This will enable you to cut a year or two off your studies and will relieve you off the stress of applying for medical school after your third year of college.
There are a couple other programs as well at other medical schools, but I don't remember which schools they are.
Check out http://www.studentdoctor.net for tons of information and posts from other pre-medical students.
Good luck! :)

Specifically it will not be helpful on a college resume. It will help you in the long run by the experience of what is going on in the hospital. Some of the people you work with may see and like your work ethic; they may be able to write you a reference letter, or recommend someone to talk to in their educational department that can help you get into medical school. The people there may have good suggestions on what major to go into for your undergrad and what classes to take before med school. After med school any experience you have should be helpful.

Such volunteer work is a great addition to your college admission resume. It shows your interest, commitment and personal character. Do it because it is of interest to you, rewarding, and the right thing to do.

You need to do lot more than once a week and just for 3 hours. This does not show any sincerity for what you want to do in future.

Yes, it does look good as you're trying to enter that profession. It would certainly be something to talk about in any interview situation, what sort of things you've done there etc.

I think anything positive you do - volunteer work, especially, looks very good on any type of resumé, especially a college resumé to get into med-school.
Good luck!
