take photos, as the seetcorn and caterpillar won't keep for ever. then bag it in a ziplock bag (tin and all) and take it back to the shop you bought it in. prior to that, you need to contact the Food Standards agency, to tell them, as it isn't the shop who sold it who has the problem but the company that tinned the corn. you will need as many details as possible from the tin itself (usually coded and stamped on the lid or the base), so they can identify the "canner". and as the others have said, kick up a stink!

Check the tin - there should be a freefone customer service number - give then a ring and tell them what has happened - don't take it out on them, it's not their fault - they will try to help, as they will have to check, and maybe even recall, the entire batch of tins. To do this, they will probably ask you for any serial numbers printed on the tin.

I know this, because I once found a wasp in a jar of white sauce. I actually had to send it back to them in the lid (which had the batch and factory numbers on it) all wrapped up in cling film! Opening the mail there must be a laugh a minute!

I got a very nice letter explaining what checks they had done and some vouchers !

Eat it quick and tell noone or they'll all want one...
Take a photograph of the tin and the caterpillar, then send it with a humorous letter to the manufacturers. You may get a lifetime supply of sweetcorn - think of all those yummy caterpillars you can eat then!!!

I would write and definately state the fact that their processing system isn't completely up to standards. But all in all, your talking about some that a good dozen or so animals, organisms, etc eat. Do you freak out when you find a worm in an apple that you picked up off a wild apple tree?? Kind of the same thing....

There are a few things you could do.

Write a letter to the manufacturers and include a photgraph.

Take it back to were you bought it.

Or inform one of your local newspapers and get some money out of your story.

Extra protein is great. I would take it back to the shop you bought it and kick up a stink - they will send it back to the manufacturer and hopefully you will get some vouchers or something.
