Overall, it is bad. I had it for many years myself, but drugs only offered a partial solution. I learned what I needed to do for myself

Clinical depression is no joke and certainly not an excuse for anything. I have been there and come through the other side, its horrible, and then you have to cope with the distressing side effects of the drugs which "cure" you!
Im sure there are people who use the term very lightly if they are feeling a bit fed up and yes they may well use it as an excuse.

Please do not underestimate the damage REAL depression does to the sufferer AND the family of the sufferer!

Well, depression effects people differently in varying severities. It is also psysiologically real. However, imbalances of different neurotransmitters could cause depression symptoms. Drug therapy is helpful for some people but also other therapies can help too. Say the person has a dopamine deficiency. Drugs can restore the dopamine but then music also increases dopamine production. Determining the right kind of treatment for depression is a case by case decision.

Extremely severe depending on the case. I have been so depressed before that I didn't eat or sleep for weeks and some people get that depresses. Others do use it as an excuse but it depends on the person and the circumstances.

depression and its severity depends on the season because of the amount of sunlight received, the cause of depression , because it could be clinical or a chemical imbalance, the background or childhood of the person affected by depression, or it could be stress related. Antidepressants have proven to give people more energy, but so does medicine for ADD and ADHD. Antidepressants also help people focus... Drug addicts really can't get any thing off of them anyway, because they are used to balance chemicals in the brain

Depression can differ widely in severity. It has many causes. It can be situational and short term or it can be a disease process and need life long treatment with meds and therapy. I would never question a person who says they are depressed and I would strongly suggest they seek medical help. All depressed people do not necessarily need meds. Just talking to someone who understands and is compassionate helps.

I think that when you see comercials on TV and say things like "do you feel down sometimes do you not feel like you can get up in the morning sometimes" I mean its a wide thing. I think that yes depression is real but I think some people do use as an excuse for the meds

Depression can be hell on earth. When people say they are depressed, I trust their assessment. It seems that depression is best treated with drugs and that serotonin reuptake inhibitors solve most depression cases. My suspicion is that there is a higher percentage of depression now than there used to be.

I think people have higher expectations these days which makes them more prone to depression when things don't go as well as they expected. Additionally, I think our brains are more active in our current culture than they were in years past. It could be that that makes us suseptible to depression and other illnesses that result from neurotransmitter shortages.

I think people who make those kinds of statements having never been through it are ridiculous. The passing of a close family member can have life changing results. Real, physical and emotional results. I believe it can be VERY severe in some cases.
