What is Ted Haggard realy asking for?

He's losing a lot of money and power with the loss of his leadership role. Hopefully the true followers of Christ will be able to keep the faith without him.

As we read the stories either on TV or in print, he denied allegations of gay sex and drugs. Then, he admits to the drugs, but no gay sexual encounter. Now, he admits to having gay sex with Jones. Are you really shocked? I'm not. Expect more of these stories from the religious scene.

Forgiveness does not work when you get caught and all of a sudden ask or it. Forgiveness is based on sincere repentence.

This sort of reminds me of Pete Rose, not to compare stories, but he cheated on baseball, he knew it but never came out with it. It was not until he was caught that he admitted his wrongdoing and immediately apologizes for his act and wants forgiveness from Major League Baseball so he can get into the Hall of Fame. I think the MLB should forgive him, but tell him that he cannot be a Hall of Famer. In other words, making him pay for the consequences of his actions.

Back to Haggard. If he asks for forgiveness and is really sincere, he should be forgiven, but not be given the titles he had back. He should work extremely hard for it and then you will know how serious he is. It is not just like you ask for forgiveness and the grass is green again. There must be consequences. Just as you do not restrict a chid deserving of discipline, you do not restrict Haggard his punishment. He knows that he was wrong and must pay the consequences. Plus, let's face it, he let the congregation down and put them under much stress. They probably could not walk to the Colorado Springs Delicatessen without being stopped about pastor Haggard. What is the point of hiding your sins when they will be discovered at a time you least expect it? Some just never learn.

General Example. A young adult would be unwise to be thinking about stealing from K-Mart and scheming how he or she is gong to carry it out. That is the time to pray that they do not carry out their theft and avoid the penalty that goes with it. But instead, they do not pray and in effect, steal from K-Mart as planned and then want forgiveness [basically because they got caught]. That is an example of one who would be asking for forgiveness for all the wrong motives.

In summary, forgiveness is based on one's motive behind confessing/asking for forgiveness. The forgiveness MUST be sincere, or what would be the point. It is amazing how fast people apologize, ask for forgiveness after being exposed, especially if the person is part of something that has media content and can be aired on tv, radio, internet, etc.
