There are 29 bones all together in the adult human skull, however at birth there are 45 parts which later fuse together at "sutures". The cranium, the bit protecting the brain, is made up of eight plate-like bones. The rest are smaller, and include the facial bones and smaller protective spaces.

Large? Uh,...there are two parietal, one frontal, two temporal, one occipatal, an ethmoid, a sphenoid, mandible, two maxillary, hard pallate...I think those are all considered large bones. So I'm gonna guess 12.
