Set boundaries and keep them.
Your kid will have many friends but only one mother and father. Be parents, not friends. As parents, your kids may not like you every second of every day. That means you are doing a good job, keep it up.
Know your kid, talk to them, and listen to what they have to say.
Respect what they say, even if it's silly to you. Children don't think the same way as adults and that's a good, wonderful, magical thing. Enjoy it while it lasts.
ENJOY EVERY SECOND!!!
It passes so quickly, one minute they are babies, the next, teenagers that won't give you the time of day. My auntie has 4 grown kids and she says they are not babies long enough and teenagers way too long.

What do you mean by "smart"? Smart as in educated
or smart as in a wise thinker. If you can achieve both
in your kids then you will be lucky. Just set a good example and raise them by example. Don't insist on always being right about everything and be willing to
admit when you;ve made a mistake. Don't be your kids best friend. Be their parent, one they can count on and
don't be afraid to stand your ground when you need to
make a decision they won't like. Stay involved with their
school years, their friends and their life but do allow them
to make choices on their own once in a while. Also hold
them responsible for the choices they make. If you can do this and raise them with love, love and more love, you
will have good, smart kids that other people will look to for
advice and friendship.

This is a question I ask myself all the time and of course you know the... ask and you shall find... admonition.
Recently I read a book by Barbara Reed Stitt entitled Nutritional Guides for Correcting Behaviour where the author asserts:
If the neocortex of the brain is not nourished optimally, the conscience, the humanness and perceptions of reality are distorted or not operative.
So I would say the number one requirement is correct nourishment of children, ie , no lollies, sweets, sugars, white
flour and so on.

You, yourself, have to be smart, good. It comes from your own habits and mannerisms. If you have good habits and behave with politeness, your children will pick up on this. Reinforce good characteristics with enthusiasm. My parents raised me on "spare the rod, spoil the child" and I truly believe this works. Children need discipline, otherwise they don't understand rules and boundaries and turn into the mean kids that throw tantrums in the middle of the grocery store and the mother sits there and "asks" them to hush, but never scolds. Best of luck!

There is no replacement for the Bible as a handbook for raising children. Read especially the Book of Proverbs -aka the book of wisdom- written by the wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon

LOL Like there is enough room here to answer that!
Short answer: You take it one day at a time and be there for them in every way possible.
Also, children learn by example so set a good one. They don't do as you say. They do as you do.

Just be on top of them at all times. Discipline when called for. There is no book on this. You just have to build your children with your morals and respect. Good luck!

read, read, read, read, read!!!!!! read to them!!!!!
it's a sad fact that many children grow up having a repertoire of only a few hundred words when the possibilities are endless if they are just read to.
