You not only need the right types of grapes, but also the right mix. Make sure that there is enough sugar and acid in the different types used (sugar+acid=fermentation=alcohol). Always work with clean equipment and get advice from other hobby wine makers. There is also literature available for this interesting hobby.

Tip: take a winery tour, look around and ask lots of questions. You will get a good feel for the process and the requirements.

They're right: don't buy "Johnathan Seedless" from the Payless down the street - those are not suitable for pressing/wine making.

The best grapes are the black ones, but making white wine is just as good. All the best.

Michelle L. is wrong! In almost every country, outside of actual grape growing areas almost any city with a decent sized population of Italian or Greek heritage has stores or special stands that sell vinifera wine grapes.

If you have a winery nearby, they will sell you fresh grapes. Have you considered using other fruit? My Dad used to make wine from the juice of Guavas, Grapefruit, Pineapple...on & on. It depends on what your tastes are. Red grapes or white grapes.

You can't buy wine grapes in your local grocery store. You have to contact a local orchard or vineyard to sell you crates of grapes. The orchard will recommend the best grapes for your desired color and fermenting time.

Grapes from the vitis vinifera species. They have the right balance of sugars and acids and the best flavors.
