Agree with previous replies, the main reason freeview doesn't work is to do with the aerial, have you updated the aerial to one which accepts digital?
Ask your friend to test their freeview box in your place, and test yours in their place.
Apart from aerial, if you have high buildings near you which block the signals, but that doesn't affect your friend, that could be a reason, but it is unlikely.
Near where I live there is an area, a road where freeview doesn't work, this is due to buildings in the area. Other people in a slightly different area, can get freeview with a portable aerial, and a booster. These problems should largely go away when the signal is stopped for non-digital tv.
I don't have enough detail to be able to advise, go to their website, and if that doesn't help ring them on 0870 80 99 80 (Up to 10p a minute, but they have always answered fairly quickly when I have rang them) during the day.

Sounds like it is a problem with your aerial. You might need to get it realigned, or replaced. Look at the link below for more details
