* A pixel is a colored dot.
* Mega means one million.
A one megapixel picture, is a picture that is made up of one million colored dots. A 6 megapixel picture has 6 million dots, etc.
The bigger you print your picture, the bigger all of these dots become - and the more pixels you have, the bigger you can print before the individual dots become discernable.

when a digital camera captures a picture, the image is stored. the more pixels are stored for that picture the better quality it will be. one mega pixel is 1,000,000 pixels. that means there is one mega pixel's worth of data stored in your camera and your camera with use one mega pixel to represent your picture once printed. a pixel is just a certain amount of space represented in a 2 dimensional area.
