Hello, I am learning spanish at an intense speed and my speaking skills are coming along fine however, my ability to understand a native spanish speaker when he/she is speaking requires much improvement.

Does anyone have any tips on how to best develop this skill, I realise it will come in time but I need to learn fast.

I have started watching my movies in Spanish rather than English, of course I can only make out the odd word because it just sounds like they are talking very fast, do you think this is a good idea?

About your question try to talk with Spanish speakers as much as possible. The movies are a good idea, but requires a little practice. Nevertheless , you can keep doing it. It will become easier in time

Try to hang around native speakers as much as possible and also try speaking only in Spanish--this will be harder than you think, but it is worth the effort! I speak German, French, Spanish, Italian and of course, English---French is my best language though--i learned it growing up-(both my grandmothers are French, and my mom spoke German), but mostly I speak English, but I speak French as well as English--i am not a native speaker, as i was not born in France, but I can say anything i want, to anyone, in the correct tense, and i can also read and write, so i consider French and English my 2 languages--but once you learn one language, you can pick up 10 more---my sister speaks Russian, English and French, my brother speaks French, English, Spanish, and Japanese-so it not only runs in the family, but we all spoke French first, so the rest are really easy! Good Luck!

If you watch films in Spanish, it's best to watch them with subtitles as well so you can match what you hear with the English translation on the screen. There's certainly nothing wrong with watching films in Spanish - I used to watch a lot of Spanish tv when I first moved to Spain and it helped to attune my ear, if you like, to the sound of Spanish. Another way to do it is to listen to Spanish radio on the Internet - canalsur.es is one based in Andalucia but there are plenty more. Failing that, a trip to Spain will work wonders!

You could also try logging onto the Spanish equivalent o Yahoo Answers. An excellent way of learning the lingo by reading and answering questions. You'll pick up more widely used language that way too.

Yes, and also try listening to music in spanish while you are awake and asleep. I think Spanish rock or pop is easiest to understand.

I listen to Los Enanitos Verders and Pamela Cortes. You should check them out.

Some songs are, Mil Horas, Lamento Boliviano, Luz de dia. Its spoken very nicely.

i think its a great idea to watch spanish movies or in spanish. there are so many good spanish movies out there for you to rent.

y tu mama tambien, la mala educacion, el crimen del padre amaro, Todo sobre mi madre

look for Pedro Almodóvar's movies, they are usually really good movies. i would also suggest, ask the people you are talking to, to speak not so fast, until you can understand them when they are speaking normally.

my husband understand me if im not going to fast, he tries to do the same but i understand him everytime.

time and practice is what will help you.

watch spanish soap operas, listen to some Christian Castro and Shakira albums (they are the most popular and easiest to get lyrics for to guide you) and go to a place like a market or a restaurant where you know it's likely to be spoken and just listen. Try to remember this: don't translate as you listen, you'll confuse yourself. Try to just understand
