I was just going to have a family get together, but he'd like his friends to come over as well. It's winter, and I live in RI, so outdoors is out... I live in a really small apartment that'd in NO way fit 8-10 kids 'and' their parents or moms. I'd have it somewhere fun, but we've done Chuck E Cheese (which I hate, by the way), and Fantasyland in previous years. I was thinking of having a 'Build a Bear Workshop' party, but isn't that just for toddlers and/or little girls?... Somehow or the other, I don't think my son will want to build teddy bears with hiis friends at his birthday party... He's heavily into the Power Rangers, and so are his buddies, but there's nothing out there for that... Any ideas/suggestions please?

try http://familyfun.go.com/ for ideas. We live in MA and have the same problem. We threw a party for our 4yo last weekend - the theme was race cars. (http://familyfun.go.com/parties/birthday/feature/famf1001_racecarbday/)
We did a few craft projects with them (coloring pictures and decorating "race cars" that I made out of old tp rolls) and played a few indoor games. I painted moving boxes to look like race cars, put the kids jackets on and let them run around the yard.
The FamilyFun website has hundreds of ideas. Good luck.

Maybe you can have both the family and his friends included. Maybe you can have his friends over the early part of the day and family over the late part of the day (Since they like to stay longer).

You can just cook some food, have drinks, chips, and what ever else he wants to eat (including cake and ice cream0

Make sure to decorate (power rangers) even if it is in the home. it makes it worth the while to be there.

You can have some games to play, a pinata, pin the tale on the donkey, contest. Be creative. I'm pretty sure you son will have some suggestions.

Your son should be happy. He gets to be with his friends and his family in the same day while still having fun and getting presents/money.

Do a pirate theme with a treasure hunt. Make up a map and hide something somewhere in your apartment that they'll have to find.

Some movie theaters will have a birthday special. My niece just had one where she took all her little friends and they had their own movie room and they had a blast. Maybe something like that?

You can try a bowling party. Some children museums give parties as well.
