I have an e-machine with XP Home edition installed.
I click on "Shut Down" & the computer starts going through the
motions & gets to the point of "Windows is shutting down" and
that's it...it's doesn't shut down
what can I do to rectify this problem?

On occassions hanging at shutdown can be caused by Services etc not stopping, but remain running, hence you get the problem with XP shutting down, you might try reseeker it is a good registry cleaning program and is free.

You have to have a motherboard that can take shutoff info from the operating system. If that's the case, you'll eventually get the message, "System can be powered down now", or something similar.

It sounds like your shutdown procedure is hanging on something, perhaps some kind of timeout.

Try the on and off button on the back of the computer turn it off wait for a minute and turn it back on or unplug it for a minute
PS before doing that wait for a few minutes sometime there is time taken because of automatic updates I hate that. Good luck!
