My son has recently become a big brother so I would like his day to be extra special. I'm not sure what to do for is 4th birthday party...last year we did Chuck E Cheese, I was thinking about the Playstation (it's a big indoor playground) but EVERYONE does this around here so he's been to several of those parties. We are in Iowa and his birthday is in December so it's too cold to do an outside party...SO does anyone have any ideas how we can make this party extra fun for him and his friends? We are only inviting about 8 kids. HELP PLEASE!

Don't forget there are plenty of ways to make it special even if it's just at home :-)

First, pick out a theme. Take him to a party supply store (or a grocery store with party supplies) and let him pick out what kind of plates, cups, napkins, etc. that he wants.

I think a GREAT idea is to go out and buy all the decorations without him knowing (like streamers, balloons, etc.). Then, after he goes to bed on the night before his birthday, decorate the house and when he wakes up he will just think that's the coolest thing that the house is all decorated for his party :-)

Also, a couple days before the party let him pick out his cake and maybe some goodie bags for his guests.

Make sure to have a list of games for the kids to play. Some great games for them at that age is hot potato, musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey, or even a pinata of his favorite cartoon character. Maybe even fill up a jar with jelly beans or gumballs and have each kid guess how many are in the jar. Whoever is the closest, gets to keep the jar of candy. Or, get some small brown paper sacks and put a different object in each one. Give a bag to each child and see if they can guess (without looking) what's in the bag by reaching in and feeling around. Whoever is right, gets a small prize.

In large cities, there are companies that will bring reptiles and bugs (sometimes exotic animals) for an educational "talk" and all the kids get to interact with the animals. Interaction is key, that's what the kids want to do, and some companies don't allow it, so be sure to ask.
Bounce houses are always a hit. Get like 4 of them and do a carnival type thing.
Pony rides, some companies will bring ponies and horses for riding and pictures. Research the company carefully, some of them don't take good care of the animals and you don't want to support those. Call the Better Business Bureau and check their rep.
Kite flying is exciting and relatively unique, built in party favors too. But the weather might not cooperate.
My auntie got a room at a hotel with a pool and had a pool party there. In the room they played games, ate candy and junk food, and watched movies after lots of pool time. The kids that went still talk about it almost a year later. She bought lots of pool toys and the kids got to keep them. Goggles, floaties and the like. You might have to order them off the internet depending on the season, but, like I said, the kids loved it.
Local amusement parks, museums, and other tourist spots are also great for parties. Get a tourist guide book, you will be surprised at what you didn't know was available in your own town.
Good luck

My 4 year old loved it when he helped me make individual sized cakes for each guest. We made the cakes circles then used candy to make faces on each one. Different candy for eyes, nose, ears and mouth and thin red and black licorice for the hair. Could make them wild and crazy. After we were done we used pipe cleaners to hold the fork and stick it in the mouth. The pipe cleaner looked like arms coming out of the side. The kids loved it and we had a great memorable time making them.

Make it a Daddy/Son "Pirate party". Mommies can "host" it. Here are some ideas for you:

Let him choose his own theme and cake. Get balloons. Have a clown or something creative. Sing to him, take lots of pictures. Congrats on your new baby too.

Why not rent a costume (and have someone dress up) as his favorite character!! There is a oline service that does this, also build a bear is great too.
