I'm not trying anything fancy just demonstrating fermentation. I have a budget of 20$ and when I look for simple recipes all I hear is try this fun kit. If any one can tell me the basic ingredients and process I and my TA would be very grateful.

Beer is easy to make but it does take time.
You can find all the equipment you need in your kitchen but remember it has to be sanitized! Any foreign microbe gets in and it's skunk. You will need yeast wich you can get at a home brewer supply, ether online or in your area, a lot of metro areas have them now.
Here is a great recipe and "how to" from food tv and Good eats with Alton brown.

I've never done it, but it seem pretty straight-forward. Check the link below for the Wikipedia explanation.

A kit probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Check your local yellow pages as most towns and cities have at least one home-brew store chock-full of people that do this all the time. Either that or there may be a beer brewers club in your town.

The recipes are long to explain. Try Google, in the end though you will need the kit, the bottle capper and caps.
