Yes, not only can you get an infection in your tongue...you can actually get a brain infection from improper piercing/care. The infection that travels from your tongue to your brain is most of the time fatal. A few years back the CDC shut down a few shops in Ohio after three people died of the same brain infection caused by improper piercing techniques.
Make sure your piercer uses autoclaved instruments, you want to see them break the seal on the stuff they use on you...forceps, hollow needle, jewelry. You should rinse with Listerine before and after the piercing. A good piercer will glove up to set up the tray and put on a clean pair of gloves to pierce you.
Good luck.
PS...plan on swelling....don't drink wine or beer for about 10 days after you've been pierced.

You may be exposed to killer germs during the process if the person(s) and facility is not healthy. The after care is important because the mouth is known to be a host for bacteria and the chance of inflection is extremely high. Your speech pattern will likely be affected because the tongue is an important function in speech.
There was a report in the International Press of a USA female that died after having her breast nipples pierced, she developed the "fresh eating" disease which killed her a very short time after the procedure when a strap inflection set in.

Nothing will happen while getting your tongue pierced, but after the fact...you need to take extra care of your tongue. Meaning.....after you eat, touch your mouth, smoke make sure you use some sort of antiseptic mouth wash. Do it every time too. That way you can avoid infection and it will heal faster too.

No, it should go fine. The absolute worst but highly unlikely thing that could happen is that they have to reset the piercing if it's not centered or positioned right.
Chances are, it will go off without a hitch.

It can get infected, and then you have a nasty infection growing in your mouth. You can also loose sensation in your tongue. That includes the ability to taste. Trust me it isn't attractive and you get no benefit from it.

It'll probably hurt a lot so don't be surprised if you feel faint afterwards.
It might bleed.
I think it will also get quite swollen afterwards, so eating may be tricky.
You may gat an infection afterwards and it may damage your teeth over the years.
