Just put in your own zip code to find the dog of your dreams. If you click on any dog's name, it will tell you all about that dog, so you can see if it fits your lifestyle.> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi

The best dog to get is an adult dog from a shelter. The reason I say this is because you can look for personality traits that match yours. Dont focus on breed. For example many people think labs are great, but often times they overlook the fact that many are high energy and your family may not be. This does not make for a good match. Also gettting a puppy does not allow to know what type of personality your dog will develop (yes some of it is how theyre raised, but some of it is also genetics). Adopting an adult dog will allow you to fiond a dog that is a good fit for your lifestyle. Another added bonus of adopting an adult dog is that you will be aware of any health problems, rather than just waiting to see if your puppy develops any. The problem with focusing on breeds is that it is all generalization and often people will overlook a dog that is better for them just b/c they were focused on a certain breed. So really the best breed just depends on the person and the indivdual dog they find that matches their personality. So its different for everyone. Good Luck

That's like asking "is a truck the best thing to get?" If you are going to be driving long distances moving only yourself, then the answer would be no and you should think about getting something smaller like a Ford Focus or something like that. If you have to move lumber all over town, then a Ford Focus is definitely not the vehicle you need.

It depends on what you plan on donig with that dog. If you want a big, honking, scary looking dog with a good disposition toward the family and have lots of room for him to run around, then go with a rottweiler or some other large breed. However, you have to be ready for his physical size and exercise requirements. If you live in an apartment and need to have a dog that can be worn out from a walk around the block, then you need to get a Yorkie.

Labs are working dogs. They require a great deal of attention and exercise to keep from destroying thnigs around the house when they are young because they have been bred for generations to be able to go out and hunt all day long.

If you are only going to be able to pay a moderate amount of attention to your potential pet and don't really want to be bothered by things like housebreaking, chewing, and training, then please just get a cat.

It all depends on you & your lifestyle ... you could try this quiz ... even if it didn't really work out for you, it will give you some thoughts about what else you need to be thinking about when getting yourself a dog.

Another thing to condsider is how much you're willing to pay for your dog & how far you are willing to travel to get it. Browsing your local paper & then researching the types of dogs that are locally available might also be another way to choose.

About labradors ... there's a brilliant book out at the moment called 'Marley & Me' by John Grogan - covering the whole of the life of his wonderful labrador, Marley. It brings up all the positive & the negative points of sharing your life with one.

As for me, I'd recommend an Irish Setter. Think they are wonderful dogs, lively, good looking, great with people, children & animals. Have to make sure you brush their ears & feathers regularly, but other than that they are not harder to groom than a lab.

I have to agree with what u have already been told , we have a golden labrador and he is the most loving dog you could ever imagine .My mum had a black lab years ago and she was the very same . If the dog is to be a family pet , around kids i would not be able to recommend that breed enough . Labs are very loyal , lots of fun and they also love kids as i am sure mine thinks he is a kid , he loves to play with children . When my daughters come home from school his face lights up and he always looks for a present to give them , usually a shoe or a ball , whatever is lying around really ... Go on get a lab you won`t regret it ! They are very affectionate :)

Oh God, this is too hard to answer without knowing more info about you and your situation.

Do you have a big house with a garden, or just a flat?
Do you work, or will you be at home all day?
Do you have children?
How much exercise are you prepared to give your dog?

All of these questions need to be answered before I can answer you. Some people need to get a small dog that doesn't need much exercise, some people want to get a big dog that needs mountains of exercise...it varies from person to person, there is no "best" dog to get, that's ridiculous.

I personally have a GSD, I have two young children, a house with a garden, I'm at home all day, and am prepared to take him on two very long run's a day....so for me, he's the "best" dog.

I haven't had a pure bred Labrador retriever, but I know lots of them and they are great, I did have a black lab collie mix, and I loved her but that was a long time ago. I also had a golden retriever and I highly recommend them as a breed. I don't know anything about your situation - whether or not you have children or if you live in an apartment or house with a yard etc... But Golden's are amazing dogs, huge personalities, great with visitors and children. My Jackson was the best dog, so laid back and sweet, so full of love. I miss him terribly, but he had a great long life. I have a Japanese Akita right now, who is amazing - super smart dog, and huge. I love him, Akita's are amazing dogs, but I wouldn't recommend them to everyone. They are full of energy and are same sex aggressive towards other dogs in most cases and are highly loyal and protective of their families. They also shed A LOT!

My dog is a chocolate Labrador retriever, and she has one of the most unique personality I have even seen on dog. Labs are very good for companionship. Labrador retrivers are the most pupular dogs in america. I would recommend you get one.

if you don't mind vigorous exercise and puppy training, labs are an excellent "all around" dog. Golden retrievers are equally outstanding - good natured, obedient, loving, tolerant of other pets.

Avoid herding dogs, sight hounds and most working breeds - they are great dogs, but have unique needs and dispositions. Herding dogs are highly intelligent and energetic, and require constant physical and mental stimulation. Sight hounds are prone to leaping fences and getting lost. Large working dogs can develop poor, lazy habits if not vigorously trained, and many purebreds are prone to hip dysplasia and gastric torsion.

If you want a little less work, go with a smaller dog. Mixed-breed smaller dogs make superb pets, train well, and are easier to handle inside and outside the house.

That's right! Labradors are excellent dogs not only with children around but they are gentle, I had three generations of them, would you believe I still have the grand daughter and she is 17 1/2 yrs I am truely blessed!!! and for the guys, they are good for hiking, swimming, playing rough with, I would never own anything but this dog, and NO! I would not dress her up, which seems to be the rage right now...:o)

Im going to have to agree that boxers are awesome dogs! ive had 3 over the last 10 years and I'll never be without one! they have the best facial expressions, are extremely funny, loyal, and sweet at the same time. The only thing is they have a lot of energy so if you want a more mellow dog....a boxer isnt a good choice.
