What I would do is wait until December and go to the store [if your area does it] and pick a child or two from the charity [like what Kmart does] and buy them some presents. A lot of families don't have money for presents. One year I bought presents for a little girl. It was fun because I have just boys, so it was nice to buy dolls and stuff like that. I also put in ten dollars for the parent [s] to buy a little something. I didn't have a lot of money and my son and I agreed that some of our Christmas fund would go to help another child. Turns out that his teacher put his name on a list like that and he got a couple new outfits new shoes and a couple toys. We were not well off at all but it does make you feel good to wake up on Christmas and know that somewhere a child is smiling and happy and you made that happen.

The $1,000, or £1,000, you won is capital.
It appears you have little considered winning, or what you would do if you won.
I will assume it is £1,000. Take your time to decide what you want to get from the money. You are your biggest asset, investing in your desires could give more money to the causes you want to support, if it increases your income.
It is very easy to spend £1,000 and not be aware of where it all went. It might seem a lot to you, but it could soon go, so think about things which could enable you to do more for the charities you want to support, and for your own satisfaction.
First establish what you want from the money, then when you feel satisfied with what it will give you, you will be in a better position to decide how much you want to give to charity.
If you choose you could help the charities much more than the money alone could.

Anything you get given for nothing is a bit of luck. Whenever I have a bit of luck, I try to pass some on. If I get given a bag of vegetables, I'll pass some on. I can earn quite good money when I face paint so I always do the fundraisers for free. If I take a lot of money when I'm out facepainting, I pass bits on to the homeless, big issue sellers, buskers, etc. If I get given a bag of clothes, I'll pass some on. Luck is there to be shared. You reap what you sow. If I only win a tenner on the lottery, I buy all the family a bit of chocolate and then put a quid in the charity box on the counter. Always pass on some of your luck, then more luck comes your way.

Think about charities that may effect your area or your families. Do you ahve any family members with and issues that have research charaties (cancer society, diabeties ect)? You could donate to one of those. Do you have a great love for animals? Donate to a local shelter or the ASPCA. Do you love wild life? World Wildlife Foundation or any local wild life reserves would be appreciative. What would make you feel happy? That's how I would look at it if I won the lottery. Good luck and congratulations!

Sure you are right if you can afford to share with the less fortunate. Honestly though $1000.00 is not really a lot of money and wont last very long if you are planning on spending it. I say give a little to charity and save the rest.

Congrats on winning the money & wanting to help otheres. Think, is there someone thats been there for you when you were down on your luck? Is there a person with a hardship you once went through who needs help? Is there a cause that is special to you?
Don't forget to take care of yourself. Investing in a CD or the like would help your money grow. With intrest, you would have more money to do good. Just think of a cause that speaks to you and spend wizely.

Congratulations first think of your own family, then yourself & when you come down off that high logically think which is the best way you can be sure the charity bit gets to who you want it to get to?& doesn`t go on administration or some thing unrelated to the purpose of giving it in the first place.Very thoughtful of you though Well Done.

most definately. not sure if you are at all religious but the bible states you should give 10% of all earnings or gifts to the church.
you could use the same rule give 10% to your favorite charity like the breast cancer foundation, or make-a-wish foundation or to an orphanage. I always dontate to Florida Baptist orphanage. Feels good giving to kids who dont have anything including parents.
good for you!
