American Bulldogs are well known for their loyalty, bravery, and protective natures, however not so well known as a vicious guard dog. I have a 9 month old AB who freaks out when someone comes to the door (we never had to train him at all to do this) but as soon as the door is opened he's all over the person giving kisses and wagging his tail. Many of the AB's in rescue or in shelters were given up by people who expected them to be something they weren't. While my AB barks constantly, many AB owners say their pups didn't find a voice until they were almost 2 years old. I can say with confidence (once your pup is a little older, he's still just a baby) that if you or your children were in danger your AB would be right there defending, but it sounds to me like you may have gotten the wrong dog for the job you're looking to fill. Also, unless you are experienced with protection training you shouldn't be trying to teach a dog aggressiveness in any way, and trust me, this breed already faces enough discrimination just because of its name without needing any more help. Why would you want a dog that you have to worry about? A better idea is not to teach him to hate everyone except you, but rather teach him to be able to tell the difference between a friend and a foe. AB's are smart, sweet dogs, there really is no need to make them any different than they are naturally.

If you can't move house to a better neighbourhood as some have suggested - then I'd recommend that you join a puppy training class somewhere, make some friends & then make sure that when you go out for walks, you go out for a walk in the company of other people or else drive somewhere in your car to exercise your dog - hopefully, this will mean you avoid the local thugs.
I'd then teach him to bark on command. Not to be vicious because if he made a mistake & harmed one of your kids then you would never forgive yourself. Get him to bark on command & when he hears any strange noises. You're in control then.
If you are walking him & are being threatened, getting your dog to bark when you want him to would be a blessing. Especially if you make the signal to bark something very discrete, like a click or clear of the throat noise.
I'd also recommend that you got yourself a goose. Big deterent to people coming onto your property is a goose. You're used to birds so should have no problems. Just rig him up a goose house (not too sure what they need but bet you find out on the internet) & let him walk loose in the garden.... maybe not around the front though as you might never get any post. lol.
Maybe if you got a couple of females then you'd also have the benefit of goose eggs?
Please try not to make your dog vicious.

Have to be honest here, you shouldn't be allowed to keep a dog. Dogs are pets and should never be trained to attack or injure anyone. A dog can guard a home and family without biting. If you do train this dog he could turn on you and your children. If I were you I would consider moving to a safer place, if you cannot afford it, sell your parrot collection and get piece of mind.

If you train your dog to be aggressive, you're giving him a death sentence. It's one thing to teach him to protect you, but to teach him to be "vicious" when on a walk?!?! Hello! If your dog bites someone out in public (or even in your own home) you'd better have damn good proof that you were in serious danger or your dog will be put to sleep by animal control! If you want a guard dog, get a professional trainer and do it right, otherwise you're just killing your dog.

People like you dont deserve to own a dog.
Sounds like you need a burgular alarm not a dog!!
What happens if your dog attacks your children one day (god forbid like) I bet you would put him down. And he would of being doing what the trained into him.
Sell this poor dog, and let him live a full and happy life, instead of one that is going to be doomed.
Guard dogs went out years ago !

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/KwWxA
By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.
To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

Buy some insurance for your expensive parrots under your household insurance. If you are raising them as a business, buy business insurance.
Install a burgular alarm and pay for it to be connected to the police station.
That way you won't have to "ruin" a dog by training it to attack. This is a dangerous enough breed for amateurs with children. You could be personally sued for everything you own.
Indeed it sounds as if you live in a terrible neighborhood OR are kind of a nut case . . .

It will be a very dangerous dog and I suggest that you contact a professional guard dog trainer for advice on this one. Any dog made this vicious will be out of control so you will have problems.
Dogs that are this vicious have generally be subjected to brutality and cannot be kept as house hold pets as they are dangerous to any perceived threat.

Gaurd dogs are working dogs and do not go ut for walks. They are not family dogs and do not spend time in a home situstion.
They are handled by one person and no one else. They do not go out socially for walks. They are not social animals they are working dogs.
At 12 weeks no dog is going to be viscious. That takes time and training.
If you are being attacked do not go out for walks. The answer does not lie in a gaurd dog.

my staffordshire bull terrier became very protective of me by his own instinct. we had him from 9 weeks old and he doesn't leave my side so i would say spend plenty of time with the dog and as for the walking - dont! if it had happened to me i would have moved or stopped takin my dog for a walk . we have a lock on the gate so people cant get in to let the dog out or steal him. also dog id chips so that if ur dog is stolen/ lost it has a chip with ur address and name on .
i also have my dog dna registered to me so if anyone steals him i can take them to court and have evidence of him being my dog.
