Not every person looks good, for example, with a bun! one person looks good with a bun and another with ponytail. I cant give you an answer to that. And it is also important to which occasion you are Waring it that way. But the best way is the diversity; ware it one day in a bun on the next down, etc.

I usually have my hair down but I sometimes tie my hair in a messy pony tail. It is a bit beach like.

I hear & see alot of style shows on T.V. say that a ponytail is both relaxed & upscale; just depends on how its worn.
like slicked back & tied at the base of the neck ~ would be considered dressy where as a loose pontail would be seen as just plain relaxed.

It depends on the shape of your face and the length of your hair. In most cases that I've seen, hair looks best long and straight or with loose curls. It depends on the situation.
