Have you considered simply going for "GOR" which is phonetically similar to Gaur and short for Gordon?
In fact you could adopt Gordon as a nickname since it would combine the beginning of your first name and the last three letters of your surname.
Rav has awkward connotations in English and it means turnip or beet in French, so I am not sure. G would bring all sorts of jokes about G strings, so I would not recommend it.

I think it would help if you would give us a pronunciation guide. I've never heard that name & I'm not sure how you would pronouce it.
As for nicknames, I would suggest something that sounds similar to Gaurav. Again, I can't say what that would be though.

My first call is easy to spell and quite unambiguous to pronounce, yet my surname is a miles off places call that has an unusual spelling with a consonant mixture that does no longer happen interior the English language. this is often mispronounced different than via persons who understand us, or human beings from my husband's u . s . a . of foundation who're familiar with the call!

What do you think of "Garvy" (rhymes with Harvey, a not-uncommon name). Another possibility, with less class and more humor, might be "Gravy", as in "meat and gravy". You're right in looking for a name that people can grasp -- it can make a huge difference in making friends.
Best regards, Cynhilde
