Are there world wide organizations that take good used books and are prepared to pay to have them shipped? Any ideas? Don't simply want to discard them but would like them to go to good use. Yes, I do give some to schools, nursing homes, libraries, second hand stores but would like to know of additional places that may need them. Thanks!

It really is a great organization. Keeping things out of the landfill, finding things for free, the good feeling you get when you are able to give something you don't need any more to someone who needs it.

When I lived in an apartment building, I left mine in the Laundry Room for other laundry doers to read while they waited, this is especially great for magazines.

Any laundramat will probably take them.

Also, I went to BINGO for the first time last week (a charity BINGO) and they had a table set up for people to borrow and return used books for a quarter, monies going to the charity. I thought that was a great idea.

Think of places where people tend to have to wait around a lot.

Hope that helps,

I would reiterate the hospital, any hospital, suggestion. Children's hospital is a great suggestion, as a parent of a little baby who has had to live in the hospital from time to time it is great to be able to go to the library and find some great adult books to read, to make the days go by a little faster.

Send a note to the principal of the local school . He / She will be glad to send a van over to collect the books for the school library and you would probably be blessed in return !

How about a charity? What about "big Brothers."? They will come right to your house and pick them up. What about Childrens Hospital? Or "any" hospital Library, they can always use good books. Either way, good luck.

If there is a veteran's hospital near your town, they would be very happy if you would drop them off for their patients to enjoy. Most Senior citizens Centers would like to have them. You can call The Salvation Army and they will pick them up. Give them away locally and there is no postage to pay.

Just leave them in places where lots of people go: airports, bus stations, public toilets... (but dont leave them actually in a cubicle because they are likely to be used as toilet paper).

That way anyone can just pick them up when they want something to read :)
