I believe the answer is NO, but I wanted to ask. Here's my situation. I have an old Dell desktop that came with all the Microsoft Office software. I wish to move it to a new Dell that I bought that doesn't have any Office software. I do not know if this is possible. There are just so many files pertaining to Office, I would not know which to copy. Any ideas? Also, since it came preinstalled on a Dell computer, can Dell send me the install disks do you think?

Note: I'm going to delete it off the old computer and get rid of the old computer, so it's not like I'm trying to illegally copy it. It's still my legitimate legal copy, but I want it on a different computer of mine.

no you can't, when it is installed files aren't just copied into one folder - they are placed all over the hard drive.

plus there are entries written into the registry too.

you really can't copy ANY installed program to another computer OR onto a disc. you need to re-install from the original source.

The problem is the .dll files -- Dynamic Link Libraries. Microsoft designed it that way so that if there were any important features or updates, Excell itself could still stay put and a downloadable update would come from a more modern version of .dll. You have to have the install disk to fix the links between Excel and the .dll (that run other things besides).

I reinstalled Win98SE and still had to relocate my Office install to fix links to Help files and other things.

Having said that, there is another solution. OpenOffice is a free office suite software available for the download. It comes with a spreadsheet. OpenOffice will import and export the MS file formats. The buttons and menus are almost exactly like Microsoft Office Suite.

Dell can only sell OEM software with a computer bundle -- software is pre-installed on the hard drive -- or the full-priced software package.

No you can not even if you had had the disc that came with your computer the back up software is created for that hardware that came with that computer so you cann`t. Only when you copy to a hard drive that will be used by the same hardware but at this point I am assuming that you are doing it for hardware upgrading am I right ? so forget that buy a microsoft office program since you already have the computer. Sorry

In most cases .... no. This would only be possible if the version of excel is pre Office 4.3 (Windows 3.1 version). Back in those days the program files were almost entirely self contained in a single directory .... all you had to do was copy that directory.

Past decade versions are a different story. Dell might send you the disks, however, would surely charge you for them. If your original PC is out of warranty they may even refuse your request altogether.

Suggestion : Go out & buy yurself a recent "student / teacher issue of MS Office. Very affordable & very legal.

If you have the CD that came with you old computer, you can use them to load the software on the new machine. I believe that Microsoft allows two installations (assuming one for home and one for business) without any problems. I had a need to install on a third machine and I had to call M/S and a phone system stepped me through the process.

The original computer should have come with a back up disk which has the loaded applications. You can load Excel from one to the other but it would be a big pain. You would have to find all of the files, the registry entries, etc. Not worth it.

I have done this method. I took the HDD from the new computer, installed it as a slave in the old one and transferred files to it, then reinstalled it in the new computer. There is a program out there that uses your serial port to transfer files but I couldn't find it using a search.
