There's actually a very good reason for wearing white (or another neutral colour) while painting - because if you wear coloured clothing, that colour will reflect onto what you're painting and throw your colour balance off.

I'm not kidding - I learned this from an outdoor painter, tried it, and was surprised at the difference it makes in my art.

Also, white reflects more light back onto your artwork, giving you an additional light source.

You may think we're crazy, but in fact, we're mighty clever!

Because bleach is the strongest cleansing agent which works best with paints. Because some paint stains are not obviously paint stains on darker colors or patterned items, so people might think that the person's just messy, but when wearing all white they figure they're a painter by profession.

That's just an old stereotype that really isn't true from my own experiences. Of the many artists I've known (myself included) they pretty much wear whatever old pair of jeans and tee shirts or other such clothes to paint in. I do know a few 'old school' artists who still wear smocks when they paint but these are rarely white.

We Painters wear what is cheap and is beyond needing to be cleaned regularly. besides you will find that historically white cloth was usually the cheapest and that is why we go for such things

they don't...that is only true in old movies and such. We painters wear what is comfortable and what already has some paint stains on it (pretty much the whole wardrobe has paint on it, however!). My favorite things to wear are pajamas or sweats! comfort is important!

This is a stereotipe. I have seen many peinters wearing all different color clothes, aprones, etc. One of mine is dark blue, the other is pepito!
On the other hand, white is easy to wash and keep clean, as you can wash it in 95 degrees, so that is why doctors, and many others wera white.
Why to brides wear white?

cause they want to, or because most paints are light colours and won't show up so much on white clothes as apposed to wearing dark colours like black you'll see the paint more clearer.

So they can bleach the stains out without ruining their clothes.
