Most likely due to the fact that even though we love our children, they tend to suck the lifeforce out of you. Especially in a store.

Parents are tired. It is not easy to shop with a child. I only have one and it is stressful for me. I feel sorry for the other parents in the store who have 2 or more children shopping with them. Don't get me wrong, parenting is one of the greatest experiences ever...it is also the most stressful. When I go shopping with my daughter she is good until she knows other people are looking, then she trips over everything and falls all the time and then other people look at me like I'm a bad parent. They want everything in the store and when they don't get it they scream and cry. When I was a kid I would have been slapped, but now a days even when you yell at your child some "childless" person comes over and tell you that you shouldn't talk to your kids like that and gives you advice on how to raise them. People who have 2 or more kids with them, those kids are running around the store and fighting over everything. Parents are exhausted because the kids have been acting up all day, not just in the store. You are only seeing a glimpse of their everyday life.

It is exhaustion or stress, most likely. When I take my two kids to the grocery store, I have to take a minute to calm myself before I can even drive home. Children, especially young ones, are very hard to keep up with in a public place. One day, my son managed to pull me down in the middle of the grocery store. He is only two and a half. Every trip outside of the house is an adventure. I am completely calm and relaxed when I am at home, a place that is child friendly, or out without my children, though.

Parenting is hard, its takes a lot of time and energy to raise a child. Parents get stressed out. But you are not in the right places all of the time. Try going to a school play, see the pride and happiness in these same people. Or to an afterschool sports game. Or bar b que. I've seen single people with the same long sad face. It's everyone, not just parents.

Are you serious? I think we all try to be in a good mood and be cheerful whenever possible ... but carrying the heavy burden of a mortgage, car payments, hospital/doctor bills, home upkeep, elder care, job stress, car repairs, preparing breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, worrying about Christmas presents, parent teacher conferences ... all these things weigh on our minds.
I know plenty of childless couples who are just as stressed as the parents I know ... but I guess the simple answer is that there are just a lot of responsibilities that can really weigh you down.

the young and single view every situation as a chance to meet some one new, so they make more of an effort to be bubbly and outgoing.
Parents who go to a store with the kids are there on a mission. Get in, get what we need, get out with out breaking anything.
And I think you are generalizing just a bit. I take my kids with me and sometimes we have a blast and sometimes its stressful.

because once you have kids you have to devote every waking second to supporting them, saving for college, making sure they don't wander into the street, listening to them scream, cleaning up after them, taking every family vacation to disney world, being too tired for sex, driving them to little league, etc. yikes.
NOTE: i'm not bashing parenthood or parents, and i'm not trying to imply that there aren't also great things about having kids. i'm just saying that i can't imagine how anyone manages to be a good parent and still maintain any kind of life for themselves. if i were living like this, i'd have a long face all the time too.

HA! It's a well known fact that many parents tire out very quickly. Kids=Less Sleep=Long Faces.
More Sleep+More Money+Freedom+Good Times=No Kids!
LOL! I'm just joking, kids are a blessing.

From my circle of other parents, most of us are just sleep deprived, we don't get much "me-time", and miss alone time with our spouses. Plus, each stage with kids often brings on a new set of frustrations. Kids are the most wonderful and the most difficult! This is not a pity-party of course- just lputting this out there for you to see for yourself.
