I am starting some community service projects on my college campus, does anyone have any good ideas on how to get college students to recycle. Serious Answers only.

Sure, do this:
-Make sure you put recycling bins in every dormitory on every floor. Make sure they're right next to the garbage.
-Make sure recycling bins are placed around campus, on walkways, in busy hallways in buildings.
-Make sure people know what can be recycled. You'll have to do a posted flyer blitz, that's for sure. Better yet...
-Get the campus administration (probably student government is best) to send out a mass email to students saying what's going on, why they should recycle, and WHAT IS RECYCLABLE. (Caps mean it's important! ;) )
-Keep a count, if possible, of what was recycled. How many pounds of this, that, or the other thing. Have that email go out a few weeks after the first, praising the students for their great job recycling and how much recyclable material was collected.
-In the second email, repeat what's recyclable and what's not.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Make it a competition, the person who collects the most recyclables wins a Starbucks card or something that a corporation will sponsor you. Easy to get sponsors for this.

If you are going to put up bins for recycling have a clean up day again with corporate sponsors so students will, one know where the bins are located and two the students will see how committed everyone else is to recycling and it will rub off.

Have the local recycling plant come to campus with a block of aluminum cans with a challenge who ever guesses the correct amount of cans wins cash while the students are filling out the questionnaire the recycling plant can inform them on the idea of recycling.

The First step I would take if I were you is finding out who is the 'head' of campus life, if no one then go to your dean and share with them this idea and the concerns that led you to this idea and see if he/she sees things from your perspective and then ask them if they would permit and in turn support a student run recycling program. This would be a great start. I did this when i was in High School and it worked out great and I felt better about participating in the lunch hour. I realise High School is different than University life but my above suggestion is a good start in any educational environment. If the dean is not the person that is in charge of such activities then ask him/her if they know who is and then go from there. I hope this helps you some.

Talk to the senior tutors and see what they think, with their backing it will be easier. Gather a small groupl of like minded students around you. Advertise with leaflets, word of mouth, posters, campus radio/magazine....as widely as posible. Get the collection poiints established and make sure the place is kept tidy and emptied frequently.
Good luck!
