I have to pick up my car from Boston and drive cross country to Calgary sometime between X-mas and New Year's. What is the best route? US or Canada high way? How long it will take? Any travel tips?

The best way is WITH CHAINS!!!!!!!! And allow a couple of extra days (at least!)

If you drive through the US you should stay far enough south of the Great Lakes to avoid the heavy "Lake Effects" local blizzards
during cold snaps - at least not further north than I-84 to I-81 to I-80 to I-79 to I-70 to I-74 to I-39 to I-94, thence through Minnesota to I-29 in North Dakota, north to Winnipeg thence via the Transcanada to Calgary. Temperatures will be considerably warmer as well, at least until you reach Wisconsin; however you will be more exposed to the possibility of getting caught in American Great Plains blizzards (which are generally more intense than Canadian storms because of their being fed by Gulf of Mexico moisture flows) and ice storms. But there will be many more places to stay in case of weather emergency; lodgings a bit more expensive than Canada but warming alcohol less so).

If by Canada of course from Boston thru Vermont (I-93 to I-89) to Montreal, thence the Transcanada (via Ottawa-Sudbury) all the way to Calgary. Make sure you check the weather on Vermont NPR before crossing the mountains and on CBC after reaching Montreal and afterwards.

I live in MI and it takes me almost 4 days to drive to Calgary. I go through the UP to MN, WS and up to Canada and drive west. Its a long long drive.

With both hands on the wheel and your eye on the Weather Channel..Generally stay south, like 81 to Wyoming and then north, but the weather can quickly change so be prepared for alternate routes.

No matter which way you go, you may run into storms.
2,677 mi (about 2 days 1 hour)
