I'll tell you what not to bring.
-A sense of individuality and that you are somehow 'special'
-Thoughts of living for the next few years as you will be told repeatedly that you 'suck' and will 'die in Iraq'
-Self worth
-Taste buds. You won't need 'em, and you won't want 'em.
-cloth underwear. Definitely bring something that won't chafe after a VERY long time.
-Jokes. They won't be funny.
-Knowledge of the movie 'Full Metal Jacket'. You can watch it, but if you talk about it you'll look like a dum-A. The real thing is a lot harder.
-And your nervous system. You won't be feeling anything positive for quite a while.

Your recruiter should be able to supply with a list of acceptable items. I brought my own skivvies, shampoo, soap, and deodorant, brush, and toothbrush.....that was OK. Bottom line though YOU DO NOT NEED TO BRING ANYTHING with you, and if you have any doubts it is probably better if you don't. Contrabands (unacceptable items) will be taken away until graduation.
New recruits are supplied with all the clothing (uniforms, running shoes, skivvies, PT gear, etc.) they need and also given the opportunity to buy any personal hygiene items they need, so don't worry about packing anything.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
Once they process you in they will take you to the depot and you will get everything you need at that time. Yes that does include envelopes and note pads and stamps....
Once you're there, you're family CAN mail you stuff, it just depends on your drill instructor...some allow cough drops and gatorade packs...but no snacks or anything like that.
Good luck!!
wait...I read that soo wrong...I could have sworn I read "what do I need to bring with me?"
what you're allowed to bring....well you can bring a Bible....and pictures....but honestly...you really won't need anything else...you seriously WILL be able to get any other thing at the depot.

Your recruiter should give you a list of items that recommended to bring (toothbrush, shampoo, etc). You won't get to keep most of your personal affects. They will be locked up until after you graduate. If you want pictures of fam, etc, I recommend having people send them to you AFTER you get there. Otherwise, you run the risk of them being used to ridicule you. Trust me, you don't want to give your TI more ammo. He/She will find plenty enough.
Most clothing type items will be issued to you, and you will have the opportunity to buy toiletries, etc every so often.
Ask your recruiter for the list. This might help: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/marinejoin/a/marinebasic.htm

Bring some very cheap clothes to wear, and as little else as possible. They will basically provide you with everything you need to live and any possessions become a burden to have around really while your there.

The clothes on your back and glasses if you wear them. They'll either issue or make you buy everything else. It's better than the army's system. They tell you to bring the stuff, and then make you buy it when you get there.

The clothes on your back, and the shoes on your feet. Leave everything else at home.
