MDF isn't wood, but it is used frequently in pieces that are getting painted because it is cheaper than wood. I don't like working with the stuff because the dust is just bad, but I do use it when I can to save money. It really does paint up nicely too. It comes in 4 x 8 sheets, and it is really heavy, and you will want help negotiating it through the table saw. On the other hand, pine is great for shelves too. It comes in different widths so you won't have to rip up big sheets of mdf. It can be finished in a variety of different ways that are non-toxic, which would be nice for a children's center. If you factor in the labor involved to get from mdf to finish product, as opposed to pine....pine wins in your favor. So the mdf is cheaper up front, but more $ in the long run. Water-based stain, shellac, and wax makes for a beautiful, non-toxic finish too!

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/ManualOfWoodworking
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

I'm not a builder, but from experience, i would go with the pine. We have had the MDF warp and if it gets wet, it rots.

If money is not a concern......then pre finished hardwood plywood ripped and sawn and faced would be a nice look. Tennessee red cedar in one area would be great even if just one shelf of it.If cost is a concern I would go with prefinished white particle board and assemble it myself. Hope this helps.......all depends on the closet size as to what one might construct.

I just like to work with pine better. It finishes nicely and looks good. I prefer ash though as my favorite. Unless I can afford oak.
