Newport. I just think it's nicer. Plus it's closer to Laguna Beach, which is beautiful and a fun place to walk around -- lots of little shops, galleries, restaurants. I recommend dinner at the Aegean Cafe (Greek food) in Laguna.

Redondo Beach is a poor substitute for Newport Beach. Here is why.
Newport beach has the ocean on one side and the bay on the other. If you want surf and wind, try the ocean side. If you want calm water and beautiful views try the bay side. On the bay side are shops, boat tours, a working ferry boat to Balboa Island, a small amusement park, restaurants, etc. On the ocean side two ocean piers, a five mile long boardwalk, a view of Catalina Island, etc. I would never Redondo with its polluted beach, and impossible parking to Newport with it's huge public parking lot and amenities.

Redondo Beach is where immigrant families hangout in the weekends. There's an amusement center and a little marina at the pier, as well as snack shops and crack-your-steamed-crab- open restaurants and an oyster bar. There are also upscale eateries along the coast if you want something fancier. The general atmosphere is plebian and well laid back. The water and the beaches in Redondo are not as clean but there are plenty of non-water activities you can enjoy.

If we're talking beach/sand quality, I would go with Newport Beach... much nicer and cleaner. But I have to say that the night scene in Redondo (actually, Hermosa, but close enough) is more fun.

Stay at Redondo Beach... you can visit the bars and nightclubs in Hermosa Beach, which is only a few miles away. You can also drive to Marina Del Rey to look at the yahts.
