Mezuzah = sacred parchment inscribed by hand with the two portions of Torah: "Shema" and Vehaya (Duet. 6:4.9; 11:13-21) including the verse "And you shall inscribe them upon the door posts of your house and upon your gate."

(a small case with a scroll that is a constant reminder of God's presence and God's commandments)

post script....to Prof. Bradley....do you have yours inspected regularly? Wondering how I will accomplish that in the armpit of MO. And, yes, I do believe it will be a blessing.

I'm Jewish, don't worry! For me, I would think it would a great thing to do as a mezzuzah does bless the house. Are you putting one up out of respect for your step family or because you do indeed think it will be a blessing and a "mitzvah" to do? If you truly believe in it's sanctity, as it is a sacred object whether then to appease your step family then it's fine.

dont listen to names he can be a little militant

you can do what ever you want their is just no requirement for you to put a Mezuzah on your door post.

though the one thing you sould not do is make a blessing over it sense you have no requirement for it, unless your step family is planing to live in your house.

theres no real reason for you to, but I've not heard any huge problem as such with non-jews doing it as long as its respectfully done.

>>"whatis a Mezuzah? "<<

its a small device that contains a small scroll with a very specific prayer written on it, that is attached to the door frame in a certain way, with a certain blessing.

I'm jewish and my 2 cents is that as long as your doing it honestly, respectfully ,and properly. not taking it seriously and meaningfully, makes a mockery of it, and thats just not appropriate.

As long as you have the ceremony performed properly, I don't see a problem with it.
