On the last date I went on, the guy didn't hug right at the end of the date. He turned his head to the side. It gave me the impression of a little kid hugging his mom. Definitely felt weird. I didn't want to slap him, but the hug was less than satisfying.

this is pretty deep, the person who is not hugging probably wasn't hugged very often growing up. Even if they don't hug back still give them hugs. They are probably carrying around some baggage from their childhood, doesn't mean that they don't deserve a hug. Just don't expect a fantastic hug in return and remember everyone has different issues. Feel happy that you gave a person who wasn't hugged much as a child something to remember. Your hugs count more to people who are afraid to hug back.

Yes, I have but I've learned to always turn my head away from people. I love giving hugs and I love getting them. The ones I don't particularly care for are from the people who "pat" your back so hard it makes your head rattle! LOL With those folks I just brace myself and try very hard to give a quick hug and get away fast!

Some people don't like to be hugged, therefore, the hug turns out to be awkward. I don't like to be hugged by every person I know, and definitely not strangers. Only VERY close family and friends.

I don't know if that may be your case, but if you find that you're the one initiating the hug, and the other person kinda cringes, and it turns out awkward, it may be that they just don't want to be hugged, but don't want to be rude to you.

If it's casual, my rule is "head to the right, lips away from their face or over the shoulder". I don't want to be caught in embarrassing snafu.
