Moral and ethical guidlines that we have today were handed down from millenia past.
And it has nothing at all to do with Religion.

Before the ten commandments were "handed down" to Moses, do you suppose stealing was OK?
Many of the things listed on the ten commandments aren't even considered that bad anymore!

What's worse not going to church or molesting a child (not listed anywhere specifically in the bible)?
What's worse? Coveting your neighbors' goods or having an abortion or two or ten?(again, not listed anywhere specifically)
I could go on and on with this.

I don't follow your line of reasoning.

Since God created everything and everybody, you ought to see that morals were handed down from above and that they didn't just pop up within the mind and heart of man.

It had to have a more spiritual foundation.

Just because people don't consider certain things to be that bad anymore, that don't change the ways of the Almighty God.
God will judge all sin. Basically all wrong doing is sin.

Mankind in it's own sense has determined which sin out ways another, when in fact all sin is evil and should not be done, whether it is child molestation, homosexuality, adultery, stealing, murder, and telling lies.

You are therefore not looking far enough back to base your findings on.

There are alot of things not found written within the pages of the Bible because if all that happened from the first man Adam all the way through to the last book in the bible (Revelation), there wouldn't be enough room to contain all accounts.

Therefore God allowed what he knew would be of the most use to mankind to be contained within the bible.

If you therefore have any unanswered questions, I suggest you wait until you get to heaven and then ask God.

In conclusion, morals came from God above and handed down to the first man Adam.

A person can become God if he is truthful, honest, follows righteousness, helps needy, responsible and listens to his heart.Religion is made to make people lead an Ideal life but fundamentalists make people to misunderstand religion.
Be good and do good should be the ultimate goal for every human being and is the essence of all the religion.

It puzzles me too. According to most religions (yeah, I'm stereotyping), there are certain things you have to do to get to heaven. They usually include following the 10 commandments, some require sacraments and confession, others require you to be saved.

Anything else might be a personal choice, such as deciding to follow certain sections of the bible.

But it seems as if most people believe that if you just stick to those minimum requirements, that's all that's necessary. That gives people lots of leeway to be as bad as they wanna be. So long as it isn't specifically required or forbidden, they're good to go.

So what else keeps them in line? Keeps them nice, polite, etchical, etc.? How does one account for that? I know, and many others know, but I can't figure out why others don't get it.

In some cultures in the past polygamy has been accepted as being moral, just following common sense thinking...in others it has been considered immoral / unethical...same thing with homosexuality....and abortion, we can see that some see life as beginning much earlier than others and so to some it is unethical, others perfectly ethical......But mostly, who are we to decide what is right or wrong without consulting the Creator of all things?

There is a way that seems right ot a man and this way ends in death. Yes men make moral judgements they are not always righteous to God. As he stated mans righteousness is as filthy rags to God. True morality is defined by God. If not we have only our individual ideas of morality. If I am a murderer to me murder is moral and my idea of morality is a good to me as your idea of morality if there is no God. What I am saying without an independent moral righteous judge it would be every man for himself. without a God we could have a democracy which enforces the morality that it feels is for the overall good of its people...but true morality and righteousness comes from God and can only be judged by him as you well know the majority is not always correct and righteous and moral.

What's your point? Abortion is now LEGAL, and considered MORAL by many people. Why? Because morals based on GOD's will have been abandoned in favor of "morals" based on the whims of society and the religion of secular humanism. Of course a society separated from God will still have some notion of "morals". The problem is that many things such a society accepts as moral are objectively IMMORAL because they violate law of God.

I can break 8 commandments and no one would care.

The Egyptians had a far better legal code before the ten commandments came along. Even Buddha's laws made more sense.

There is no sin that is worse than another sin.

Sin is sin in the eyes of the living God...all sin is an abomination.

When you only have yourself as a standard, then you don't have much for standards and morality for that matter.

We all fall short of the glory of God. That's why He's given us the gift of grace. The gift of salvation.

Thats a bunch of bull... The Lord is the core of morality. He is the truth which is what morality is.

Morals difined-Feminine of H529; literally firmness; figuratively security; moral fidelity: - faith (-ful, -ly, -ness, [man]), set office, stability, steady, truly, truth, verily.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

the 10 Commandments were in effect, maybe not spoken of but in effect since the beginning. they are only considered not that bad anymore by man, but what about to God? its amazing that we try to bring God down to our level instead of trying to reach up to His.
