something to be aware of:

the Coast Guard is NOT currently accepting any Prior service personnel, unless they have a critical skill.

No the Coast Guard is not like the Army. Basic will be the same, for the most part.

The CG falls under the Department of Homeland security. BUT (and this is a HUGE but) you can be deployed to Iraq! We do have CG off the coast right now, just as we did in the first Iraq war. So don't think you're joining the CG to avoid deployment. Also, even though you fill out your "Dream Sheet" in Basic that doesn't mean you'll get anywhere near where you ask for. (The recruiter will tell you that you will get to go where you ask to be placed. Don't buy that. Don't fall for it if they say "We can write it right into your contract, don't worry.") You can be sure that 99% of people graduating Basic will be spending some major time at sea. Don't worry though, enjoy the experience.

I'll answer this to the best of my knowledge (Bear with me).
My step grand-father was in the Coast guard for 20+ years and I've heard a bit about it. From what I hear you are most likely to stay around the states compared to the other branches. The Coast Guard also falls under the Department of Homeland Security currently (D.o.D. during war). You might still get to travel around the U.S. a bit. From what I've seen in my Step-Grandfathers pictures you may be in a plane/helicopter a lot. Thats pretty much what I can say right now hope I helped.
