My house mates girlfriend reckons that everyone only breathes out through 1 nostril. My house mate thinks it crap, and they've asked me to settle the argument...so I'm asking you guys...what do you think?

I was going to ask this myself! I've noticed for a long time now that if I put my hand over my nose and exhale I can feel air coming out of only one nostril. My nose is never plugged when I do this.

Makes me wonder if we inhale through only one too.

Edited to add: I am not sick nor have I had any blows to my face. I just now blew my nose and did it again and sure enough I can only feel air coming out of one nostril. I have blocked each nostril separately and I do feel air out of the opposite nostril each time I did it. It is only when both are not blocked that I feel air out of only one.

Call it what you will. Guess I'm an exception.

Your housemates girlfriend may be telling you about an abnormality that she experiences (deviated septum), however with normal anatomy we breath in and out using both nostrils.

A deviated septum is a common physical disorder of the nose, most frequently caused by impact trauma, such as by a blow to the face. It can also be a congenital disorder.

The nasal septum is the membranous ridge of cartilage in the nose that separates the nasal cavity into the two nostrils. Normally, the septum lies centrally, and thus the nasal passages are symmetrical. A deviated septum is an abnormal condition in which the top of the cartilaginous ridge leans to the left or the right, causing obstruction of the affected nasal passage.

We inhale & exhale through both nostrils. The exceptions are mouth breathers and when one nostril is blocked. So, what do I think? I don't just think this, I know this.

A person can only breathe out ind in through both nostrils (unless they are sick).
It is possible, though, to breathe in and out through the nose and mouth at the same time. I can.
Also, it is possible to breathe with only one lung at a time. I saw that on Rippley's Believe it or Not.

Why don't you put one thumb and index finger under your nostrils and exhale through your nose! If you feel your breath on both digits, you can break the bad news to your housemate's missus!!!
