I was on the aruba.com message board and someone offered me their timeshare villa for a week stay later this month. I would have to pay the person in advance so he could "change the certificate" to read my name for check-in purposes. Is this unusual? How can I know if he is for real? Do people usually rent out their timeshares, and if so, how does it work? Do you usually pay the person direct vs. the hotel you are staying at? Its at the Marriot Aruba Surf Club.

Contact the marriot directly to see what their policy is.

It sounds like the kind of arrangement that friends or family might make with each other, but if you don't know who this person is you mighth be seeting yourself up for a scam.
