Windows vista is due for release in feb 2007 and will be avalible in computer packages soon after that
some vendors such as evesham and mesh are doing packages with xp but will upgrade to vista on release as part of the price
the difference in the versions is home basic i belive is a basic version of vista not containing any bells and whistles,so it may not have any aero glass effects and a few other accesories, were pro will have everything such as voice recognition and full aeroglass effects
i wont buy vista without aero effects as i am using vista ultimate(beta) at the moment and the best part of it is the aero glass ,and the way you can tilt windows into 3d and switch between windows
regards to the cost, rumour has it that the home basic will retail for around £80( $160 approx),and the pro will be around £130($260),but this is only internet rumour control
the best advice is not to buy a new operating system for around a year after its launch, this way you will receive a years worth of updates, and will sort any bugs that are found in that initial year
good luck
p.s windows vista rc1 is now avalinle for download, this is around 95% of the final product and can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx
enjoy
