The "trainers" at your local pet mega-mart arelike the other guy said... useless.

Read several books from your local library or bookstore and find a method that you like best, THEN train you rdog. Don't use several methods of training on the dog because that will confuse him. Find a way that works and stick to it.

There are a few "nevers" in dog training:

1) never call a dog to punish it
2) never use treats to train. (Once you run out of treats, they run out of training.)
3) never use a "pinch" choker (aka German choker) without direct supervision by a highly experienced trainer. I have seen more dogs' throat torn up by stupid owners using that device than anything else.

There a few "always" in training as well:

1) Praise good behavior AT LEAST 20x more often than you correct bad behavior. Praise lots and lots of little things and the dog will quickly get the idea of what is acceptable and what isn't.

2) Corrections should be short, sharp, and uncomfortable but NOT painful.

3) A properly fitted slip choker (one that is big enough to go over the ears with a little pressure but not so big that it comes off when he drops his head) and a 6' nylon leash are all you need. Anything more that anyone tries to sell you (clickers, special collars, leashes, etc.) is just a gimick and they are using your ignorance of canine behavior to stick wasted money into their pockets.

Petsmart trainers are absolutely clueless.

Petsmart ONLY hires people without experience. Their 'training' consists of watching some videos and reading a book.

Go to a real training school, like an obedience or kennel club, where the instructors get titles on their own dogs and know how to work with them.
